About a fall

One thing that I mention on this blog from time to time is falling over. Sometimes I just lose my balance and end up hitting the floor when there is nothing for me to trip on. It happens. I can’t always stop it and just have to go with the flow and hope I don’t get too badly hurt.

I had a fall last week when I was in the kitchen, holding a mug of gravy. I started to wobble and felt like I was going to go backwards. There was a split second when I thought I had managed to catch myself in time, but then I started to wobble again and I knew that was it.

I let out a scream to let the people near me know what was happening. I usually let out some kind of noise when I know I’m about to take a tumble, but this scream came out far louder, and far more high-pitched than I intended.

So many thoughts ran through my head in the couple of seconds that it me to land on the floor, like:

  • I hope this gravy isn’t as hot as I think it might be
  • I really hope this mug doesn’t smash all over me, and,
  • Please don’t bang your head, please don’t bang your head

You will all be happy to know that none of the above happened. Yes, the gravy was quite warm, but thankfully not warm enough to burn me. I ended up with quite a bit in my hair and some running down my nose, mind you. Somehow, I managed to tighten my grip on the mug and not let go, and landed on my bottom and avoided hitting my head. Phew.

Oh, and I also managed to make quite a mess of the kitchen. Some of the cupboards, walls, and some of the floor had also been splattered by the liquid. I was mortified when I realised how bad it was but luckily, it had all been cleaned up by the time I got out of the shower. Believe me, I needed one.

I’m even more amazed that the white-and-pink onesie I was wearing came out of the wash with no lasting stains too.

Still, I don’t want to do that again in a hurry.

  1. I was reading this and thinking “o no” and then you hit me with the image of the onesie and I’m sorry but… I laughed. I hope the gravy stays in the mug from now and your feet remain on the ground!

  2. Oh I hate that… when you know you’re going to go and you just have to go with it…. Glad to hear you’re ok though…
At a recent physio appointment (the one where they have to go through all the questions as if you’ve never had physio before) she asked me whether I had had any falls in the past 12 months, my answer was what do you class a fall as, is it when I’m a bit uncoordinated and trip over fresh air, because I think I’m going to fall? or when I get up from a chair or something and my upper body just overtakes my legs, because they haven’t got the message that it’s time to move!? bless her she was a bit shocked that I class a fall as when I’m on the floor for more than a couple of seconds without cursing and finding it funny…… I did explain that it happens quite often, and has done for as long as I can remember, so I have learnt to fall….. just go with it, because if I try and fight it and tense up I end up hurting myself.

    1. I don’t think I could guess how many times I’ve fallen in the last 12 months but it happens fairly often, usually after I find myself thinking ‘Oh I haven’t fallen over in a while’.

I’m glad that you’ve learnt to fall, I still don’t think I’ve managed to do that yet, but I always try and make sure I don’t bang my head or face. I try and catch myself when I can, but sometimes I just have to go with it and hope I don’t get too hurt.

  3. I couldn’t count either!!! It’s less nowadays, as I tend to know what situations cause it so try to avoid them… but then that’s not always possible!!! banging my head or breaking anything in my arms or hands is what I worry about most… having split my head open a few times when I was little, and breaking my wrist in a bike accident – that was probably the worst as I didn’t realise how hard it is to do anything with an arm in a cast…. I tend to drop my shoulder down so that takes the impact then kind of roll to soak the impact up….. One of my friends said I can make a simple trip look like a Hollywood stunt, when I tripped up a curb when we were out one day and managed to twist round mid fall!!!

    1. Glad you’ve managed to learn what siutations cause them. I can trip over fresh air. Sometimes it happens if I get nervous that I’m going to fall too. Hope you didn’t get too hurt when you tripped up the curb!

      1. I have to be careful because I love dogs, believe it or not I think some dogs seem to sense that a person has a disability so are really gentle….
I had to train my dog when we got him not to jump up at me as he is really lively and excitable.
