I can tell I’ve spent too long writing when…

  • My back has been sore for an entire week
  • I have had a numb bum almost constantly for the last three days
  • My hands are killing from so much typing
  • My legs are stiff and in constant need to stretching
  • I can’t seem to go longer than two hours without a cup of tea now

I’ve come to the conclusion that I’ve been spending far too long at my laptop lately and I love taking five minutes to lay down and stretch out all my muscles which my physios recommend that I do anyway to help with the muscle tightness that I get as a result of my Cerebral Palsy.

Thankfully, Camp NANOWRIMO is almost over. I set myself the goal of writing 60,000 words in the 30 days of April. My current word count is 39,641 so I’m not sure I’ll make it but it’s possible I guess.

Trying a different kind of walking frame

For a while now, people have been suggesting that I try a walker that I push in front of me, rather than one I pull behind me like my current Nimbo frame Martha.

I’ve been putting this off and putting this off for ages because, if I’m honest, the thought absolutely terrifies me. What if I fall backwards? What if I fall trying to push it down or pull it up a kurb? How will I cope going down a hill?

The thing is Martha is getting old and is starting to show signs of wear and tear. I’m scared but I’ve said I’ll give it a go, because at least that way I’ll know if it’s right for me once and for all. A lady from the hospital dropped one off for me yesterday to try while I still have a Nimbo Frame to use. If I like, I’ll just carry on using it, and if I don’t, I can send it back.

Kicking back pain in the bum

I get back pain quite often, usually as a result of the way I’ve been sitting, or standing, or spending too long in one position.

These days, I get it mostly in one of two places, usually in my upper back, (usually rather unhelpfully on the spot where my bra strap sits, just to make it extra annoying), or right at the base of my back. If I had to choose, I’d say that the latter of the two is the more annoying one because when I get it there it always feels like my back would cave in on itself if someone were to put too much pressure on the sore area. I know this won’t happen, but anyway…

Needing to stretch my legs in public

From day to day I never know how stiff I’m going to be or how achy I’m going to feel.

This doesn’t really bother me. I’m used to it and I’d like to think that I’m pretty good at just getting on with it.

Sometimes it can be a bit awkward though if I need to have a good stretch in public.
